And the most popular genre of these games are role playing games, otherwise known as RPGs.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive
This is a game that’s had a bit of a legacy. This multi-player shooter was released back in 2012 by developers Hidden Path Entertainment and Valve. Gameplay involves two teams, the terrorists and the counter-terrorists, against one another.
During 2018, the game developers released a new battle royale mode called Danger Zone to add to the hype of this tactical first-person shooter. This game received positive reviews upon its release and to date remains one of the most played games on Steam. New changes and updates were made in 2021 with the release of Operation Riptide which added matchmaking alterations, fresh maps as well as different cosmetic items available for purchase.
Rainbow Six Siege
Another tactical shooter game that’s popular in Thailand, this time from the team at Ubisoft, is Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege. While released for Microsoft Windows, PS4 and Xobox One in 2015 globally, it is now available for Playstation 5, Series S and Xbox Series X to play.
One of the reasons this game has risen in players is due to it’s emphasis on cooperation, making it a fantastic one to play with friends or family – or even strangers online. Like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Rainbow Six Siege was released to praise from critics – and has continued to be popular with fans. As of December 2020 the game has more than 70 million registered players around the world.
PlayerUnknown’s Battleground
If you hadn’t guessed from the title, this game involves battle royale. Gameplay involves up to 100 players parachuting onto an island, with the goal of finding weapons in order to kill other players. Over time, the island decreases in size which causes more excitement and makes things tougher. First released in 2017, a mobile version of the game was launched in 2018 and has gained in popularity ever since. It is currently the fifth best-selling game of all time and has generated over $13 billion in revenue. And of course, it’s popular in Thailand!
DOTA 2
One of the deepest multi-player RTS game that’s ever been made, millions of people play DOTA every single day. This free-to-play game involves loads of strategy and tactics which are constantly being added to the game.
This fantasy-themed games also offers an amazing array of characters, from tacticians and magicians, to rogues, brutes and so much more. It’s no wonder that its become a favourite from players in Thailand – this magical world is a great way to escape reality, and the fact that it’s free is definitely a bonus!
Age of Empires
Originally developed by Ensemble Studios, the Age of Empires franchise began with a first game all the way back in 1997. There are now nine games in total to choose from, and focuses on different events happening across Europe, Asia and Africa and spans time periods all the way from the Stone Age through to the Iron Age.
The series has sold over 25 million copies around the world, with the latest release in the franchise being Ages of Empires IV which was published to play for the public on October 28 2021.
League of Legends
One game that had to make this list was League of Legends (otherwise known as LoL). Released back in 2009, this game is in the battle arena style, with gameplay featuring two teams of five battling in a player-versus-player combat.
This game has continued to receive positive reviews from critics and players alike, with many complimenting it on the design of its characters, production values as well as its accessibility features.
The game also has developed into one of the top esports titles, with an international scene that’s followed by millions. The event in 2019 had 44 million viewers during the final and was live streamed on platforms like YouTube and Twitch.
