Researchers have detected that scammers are using fake caller ID information to trick users. These fake caller Ids make the users believe that calls are from some local trustworthy source like a government agency or police department, or a business company, or their bank or cable provider.
The practice is called caller ID spoofing, and scammers don’t care whose phone number they use. Recently, one scammer has used the phone number of an FTC employee. It is always very difficult to detect whether the caller ID information is real or fake.
Caller ID spoofing has become a very common technique of recent cyberattacks. Hence security experts always advise the users to visit the official (.gov) website and check for contact information if they receive any call from government agencies, banks etc. It is very risky for users to give out their personal or financial information to someone who calls even if the name or number on the caller ID looks legit.
