Low light camera performance- Why the iPhone 15 should focus on its camera

While buying a new iPhone now is appealing, some of you prefer to wait for Apple‘s 2023 iPhone, which is likely to be called the iPhone 15. The iPhone 15 has been the subject of months’ worth of speculation, and the company’s forthcoming models seem to be deserving successors to the iPhone 14.

We learned about Apple‘s potential 2023 release of the new iPhone 15 Ultra last year. Apple may rename the iPhone 15 Pro Max to the iPhone 15 Ultra, according to Bloomberg, which predicted that this year’s high-end changes might be more significant. Bloomberg has updated its newsletter and now claims that Apple might take a different course of action. In 2024, Apple might add an even more expensive iPhone above both Pro models rather than renaming the Pro Max model “Ultra.”

Speaking of the iPhone 14, Apple significantly changed its entire camera system because the rear camera bump on the iPhone 14 Pro adds larger sensors to both the ultra-wide and main (wide) cameras. This blog is all about the camera of the upcoming iPhone 15 and, specifically, it’s low-light photo and video performance!

We must talk about the features of the iPhone 14 and the expected date of the iPhone 15 before we move on to the low-light photo and video performance of the current and upcoming iPhones.

The release dates of most mainstream iPhone is generally near the middle of September or October, so it is a little unprecedented to have the iPhone 15 to be in August, but honestly, this does not diminish our excitement at all!

The camera

We will be splitting this part of the blog into two parts, speaking about the massive improvements in the front-facing performance and the primary camera performance of the iPhone! 

Front Facing


With significant improvements to its sensor, lens, and software processing, the front-facing camera in the iPhone received one of the most significant updates in recent memory. The front-facing camera’s sensor may be a little small, but its lens and sensor improvements have allowed for notable enhancements in dynamic range, sharpness, and quality. The difference between the front camera on an iPhone from a previous generation and this one is big enough for most people to notice immediately. The iPhone produces images with noticeably better sharpness, dynamic range, and detail. The previous cameras could not produce high-quality images or videos under challenging situations with mixed light or backlighting. Better hardware and software processing, particularly Apple’s Photonic Engine, has resulted in some notable advancements that deserve praise. 


There is no stunning bokeh even though the sensor is the more significant and variable focus is now available because autofocus only enhances sharpness throughout the frame and produces a slight background blur when your subject is sufficiently close to the camera. It is usually adorable and subdued. Notably, the front-facing camera has a close-focusing range, which can produce a pleasingly shallow depth of field between your close-up subject and the background.


Photos taken in low light are much more helpful and show less smudging. It’s impressive that the TrueDepth sensor, despite being housed in a much smaller package in the Dynamic Island cutout area, still maintains incredibly accurate depth data sensing. The “notch” had been reduced in size in the previous generation of iPhones. However, this much smaller array still has exceptional depth-sensing capabilities that no other product can even come close to matching. Apple also shipped a significant camera upgrade that every user will notice in regular use along with the software achievement.


We are extremely expectant for the new front camera to improve, with the help of both the software and the hardware advances!

The Ultra Wide


An improved lens, a larger sensor, and higher ISO sensitivity are all features of the iPhone’s ultra-wide camera. Although the aperture slightly decreased, the larger sensor more than makes up for this. Due to their requirement to capture a staggering amount of images at acute angles, ultra-wide lenses are infamous for being less than sharp. Since lenses are transparent, they will obliquely refract light, causing the colors to diverge. It becomes more difficult to produce a sharp image due to the lens’s wider field of view.


The ultra-wide angle lens on the iPhone is very big. Because of how closely its 13mm full-frame equivalent focal length resembles a pair of human binoculars, the term “ultra-wide” has always accurately described what it means. Similar fields of view to GoPro and other action cameras allow for capturing images and videos from a wide angle in confined spaces. While the ultra-wide is not usually known for its optical quality, and we have yet to see Apple push its limits, we expect this year’s iPhone 15 to be different!


The larger sensor and Apple’s new Photonic Engine are both responsible for the picture’s increased level of detail. Due to the ultra-wide lens’s “my point of view” perspective and the lack of detail in each shot, each shot suffers from a lack of immersion.



The main camera’s lens has a wider field of view and a 24mm equivalent instead of the 26mm it had on earlier iPhone models. Although there aren’t many differences, it aids in filling the frame with more of the scene. Moreover, a new, bigger 48-megapixel sensor is added to the primary camera for the Pro versions. Even though having more megapixels doesn’t always translate into better photos, Apple separates the pixels into groups of four and then joins the four in each group to create a single, larger pixel. Pixel binning is the name of this method, which has long been employed on Android phones. Brighter images with less image noise and less noise-reduction blur are the result. 


The Photonic Engine advances the process by enhancing color accuracy and safeguarding details. The primary camera produces top-notch images. For a photo taken with a phone, the image quality and details are excellent. I discovered that conditions with medium and low light showed the greatest improvement. The textures and colors are pleasing. Using the phone’s ProRaw setting, you can take 48-megapixel pictures if you’d like. You should be aware that these files are large. When edited, the image is saved as a much smaller JPEG.

Low Light Camera


Apple improved the Deep Fusion image pipeline to improve the iPhone 14’s low-light performance by 49%. When you go to take a nighttime photo on one of the new iPhones, the Deep Fusion image processing algorithm will kick in earlier than before, giving you better colors and faster performance. Apple claims that all of the device’s cameras perform better in low light thanks to the Photonic Engine. Nighttime scenes can be captured up to twice as well by the main, telephoto, and front-facing cameras as they can during the day and up to three times by the ultra-wide. The Action Mode feature found on all four of the new iPhone models allows for the use of all of the devices’ sensors to produce steadier video capture. With its 48MP camera, the iPhone 14 Pro typically takes 12MP pictures to capture as much light as possible. However, the phone’s ProRAW mode lets you take 48MP full-frame photos and gives you many editing options. Another advantage of the new sensor is that the iPhone 14 Pro can offer true 2x zoom. 

The Videography


When shooting at 60 frames per second (fps), a frame is captured every 16.67 milliseconds, which limits how much light can pass through the shutter. Less light produces grainier, more dynamically limited video in low-light situations. Fast-moving scenes also put more strain on the codec, increasing file size. The finished recording resembles a cheap home video more than the high-quality recording you might expect from an iPhone. As opposed to this, 30 frames per second takes a picture every 33.33 milliseconds, allowing twice as much light to enter the camera. A larger amount of light will make dark scenes look much better. It becomes even clearer in your video of dimly lit objects when you slow that down to 24 frames per second because light has 41.67 milliseconds to do its thing. All of this is true regardless of whether you’re shooting in 720p, 1080p, or 4K resolution.


The frame rate can be manually changed to 24 fps in the Camera app’s settings, though it’s not very convenient. The in-app frame rate selector allows you to change the frame rate immediately. However, it’s better if you don’t have to manually change the frame rate because you might overlook it in brighter scenes. As a workaround, Apple offers a setting you can enable that will automatically reduce the frame rate in dimly lit areas to improve the quality of your video. Activate it by selecting Settings -> Camera -> Record Video.
