How to Recover Data from Corrupted MacOS

We’ve all been there before – you’re working on an important project when suddenly, your computer crashes, and you lose everything. Or, you try to open a file, and it’s corrupted beyond repair. It’s a frustrating experience, but fortunately, there are ways to recover data from a corrupted macOS. This blog post will explore methods you can use to get your lost data back. You can use the Stellar Data Recovery Professional data recovery program to restore the inaccessible files to your Mac disc after mending. The latest Stellar Data Recovery Professional for Mac version 11.5.0.0 supports macOS Ventura & earlier, and the software is also compatible with M1, M2 & T2 chip-enabled macs.

What is data corruption?

Data corruption is a process whereby data is damaged or destroyed. This can happen for several reasons, such as physical damage to the storage device, software glitches, or malicious attacks. When data corruption occurs, it can render the affected data unreadable or cause it to behave unexpectedly. In some cases, data corruption can lead to data loss.

Recovering data from corrupted macOS can be challenging, but it is possible with the right tools and methods.

This article will show you how to recover data from corrupted macOS using three methods: Recover from Time Machine backup, use third-party recovery software, and manually recover lost files.

How to recover data from a corrupted macOS?

If your macOS is corrupted, there are a few things you can do to try and recover your data.

First, you can try booting into Safe Mode.

To do this, restart your computer and hold down the Shift key while it boots up. This will disable some of the features that could be causing the corruption.

Once in Safe Mode, you can try running Disk Utility to repair the corrupt files.

If that doesn’t work, try using Time Machine to restore your system from a backup. Finally, if all else fails, you can use data recovery software to scan your hard drive for any recoverable files.

Backup from Time machine Data to recover

Time Machine backups cannot be restored until your Mac is reinstalled with macOS.

The time machine has to be turned on and connected.

On a Mac with Apple silicon:

  1. Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.
  2. Press the power button until you see “Loading startup options,” click Options.
  3. Click Continue, then follow the on-screen instructions

On an Intel-based Mac:

  1. Hold down the Command key and choose the Apple menu.
  2. Press and hold the Command-R button until you see the startup screen,
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Data Recovery for All Mac OS Storage Devices

Data loss from Mac storage is possible at any time and anywhere! Stellar increases your ability to recover data from any macOS-based storage medium on your Mac.

Files from HDD, SSD, Fusion Drive (hybrid drive), and SD Card can be recovered.

Obtains information from USB storage devices and Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) devices.

Using Disk Utility, you can repair a corrupt hard drive on a Mac:

If you can’t get it up and running again, or if you’re having trouble recognizing an external drive, the first thing to do is just run Disk Utility on Mac.

  1. Launch the Disk Utility. This may be done by searching for it in the Spotlight Search, utility, or Apps folder. (To open it, use Command+Space.)
  2. Now, from the list on the left, select the drive that concerns you, then select First Aid.
  3. A prompt message (on the screen) will let you know that First Aid will verify the volume for mistakes. If required, it will then repair the volume.
  4. You will be warned that First Aid needs to lock the boot volume temporarily. This is a security measure to protect your data. The operating system, First Aid, will be running applications that are not responsive to the user. This drive repairing process should take little time.
  5. Any errors discovered by Disk Utility during the hard-drive repairing process will automatically be resolved.

Reboot your Mac in Recovery mode: –

When your Mac computer does not restart after restarting, you can find yourself in an even stickier situation. A Mac today does not come with an optical disc drive, so switching to another drive or disc may be challenging. Reboot is the best method in this case.

The Recovery HD can, however, be restarted if the drive failure is mild. A bootable copy of macOS is contained in this disc partition. Overwriting files on this partition won’t affect the primary disc, so there’s no need to worry about it.

Press Command+R while your Mac is starting up to enter Recovery Mode. Hold the keys down when you see either the Apple logo or a spinning globe.

As previously discussed, it is possible to recover data from your computer if you can enter recovery mode and run Disk Utility.

If you manage to boot from Recovery, you’ll need a different disc for restoring files.

Use Disk Utility with extreme caution if it fixes your drive sufficiently, allowing you to boot from it again.

Make sure you have an external drive to safeguard your data.

You can also refer to the comprehensive Apple manual for instructions on how to restart the Mac in recovery mode.

Recovery by Diskutil

The Terminal app is located in the Utility folder. To find it, open the Finder, click on the Applications folder in the sidebar, and then scroll down until you find the Utility folder. Once you open the Utility folder, you should see the Terminal app. To use the Terminal app, you need to type in commands.

  • The first command you need to type is “diskutil list.” This command will show you all the disks and volumes on your computer.
  • When you want to check a partition, you need to look at its size and find the one you want to verify. Once you find it, write down its identifier so you can use it in the next step.
  • Macs have a built-in way to check if any of your drives are failing. To do this, open the Terminal application and enter the following command: diskutil verifyVolume [drive name].

Use Terminal Window: In the Terminal window, type the following command, substituting the drive name for [drive name]:diskutil verifyVolume [drive name]. For example, if your disk’s identifier is disk2s2, you would type this:diskutil verifyVolume /dev/disk2s2This checks the disk for errors.

  • You can use a slash (/) instead of the identifier to check only your primary hard drive. The command is: diskutil verifyVolume /

Wait for Verification: You should wait until the verification process is finished before reading the last few lines of text in the Terminal window.

  • A volume named /dev/rdisk3s1 appears to be working. If a volume Macintosh HD or space on a hard drive is not corrupted, it is still functional.
  • However, if it is corrupt, it is not working correctly and needs to be fixed.

Find the Back up: You should try to repair the corrupted volume and recover files from it if you have a backup of your data. However, using a corrupted hard drive is unsafe if you don’t have a backup.

  • Diskutil will attempt to repair the volume using the following command: diskutil verifyVolume [drive name]. Replace [drive name] with the volume identifier you want to repair.
  • The purpose of FSCK is to check the consistency of your hard drive’s file system and, if necessary, repair it. By pressing and holding Cmd + S while your computer is booting, you can access FSCK.
  • Enter the following command at the bottom of the screen: fsck -fy
  • You can try /sbin/fsck -fy if that doesn’t work

If the disc utility and subsequent Mac recovery mode cannot fix the corrupt Mac disc difficulties, use a specialized Mac data recovery tool.
