How to Check PC specs: Find CPU, GPU, Motherboard, & RAM

Nowadays, most Laptop or Pre-build Desktop PC manufacturers don’t reveal all the necessary specifications of their products. It is keenly important if you’re planning to upgrade your machine or want to sell some component for any reason. More than that, sometimes knowing the specs of your computer helps you to identify which software or game will work and which will not. So, in this article, we will find out how to check PC specs and to know each & every single part detail inside the computer. Enthusiasts that build their own computers already know what hardware lies inside. That’s one of the benefits of selecting from the best CPUs for gaming and the best graphics cards for gaming and putting all the components together yourself. However, sometimes you come across a machine where the PC specifications aren’t immediately apparent just by looking from the outside. That is especially true for laptops. Even cracking open a laptop case often won’t give you direct access to the CPU or GPU without some serious brain surgery. Thankfully, Windows 10 and 11 provide a couple of ways to find your PC’s specs in a pinch. So, suppose your friend has no clue what kind of CPU or GPU is running on their system to download the latest driver software. In that case, the following tips will let you know whether you need to download the latest AMD Radeon Adrenalin, Nvidia GeForce Experience, or Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU) software.

How to Check Computer Specs/ how to check pc specs in Windows Settings Menu

For Windows 10

To check your PC hardware specs, click on the Windows Start button, then click on Settings (the gear icon). In the Settings menu, click on System. Scroll down and click on About. On this screen, you should see specs for your processor, Memory (RAM), and other system info, including the Windows version.

For Windows 7

To check your PC hardware specs, from the desktop find the icon that is labeled “My Computer”. Right-click on this and select Properties. A window should appear summarising your PC hardware specs including processor, Memory (RAM), and other system info, including Windows version.

How to check PC specs step by step?

To check the computer tech specs with the Settings app, use these steps:

  • Open Settings.
  • Click on System.
  • Click on About.
  • Under the Device specifications section, check the processor, system memory (RAM), architecture (32-bit or 64-bit), and pen and touch support.
  • Under the Windows specifications section, check the software specifications:
  • Edition — Shows whether this is a Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Home installation.
  • Version — Reveals the Windows release currently on the computer, and the version changes every year after a feature update.
  • Installed on — States the date when the last feature update was installed.
  • OS build — Indicates the build number of the release. The first five numbers represent the version, and anything after the period represents the latest quality update.
  • Experience — Reveals the service feature pack version installed on the device.

The System Information app on Windows 10 is one of the best options to view a complete overview of the computer’s technical specifications.

To view all the hardware specs of the computer, use these steps:

  • Open Start.
  • Search for msinfo32 and click the top result to open the System Information app.
  • Select the System Summary category from the left navigation pane.
  • Confirm the computer specs on the right side, including system model and type, processor brand and model, UEFI (or legacy BIOS) version and other details, system memory capacity, motherboard brand and model, and virtualization support.
  • (Optional) Expand the Components branch.
  • Click on Display to view the graphics card technical information.

Create hardware specs report

System Information also has the option to create a report with the hardware and software specifications, which you can save for future reference, inventory, or share with technical support.

To create a report with the system specifications on Windows 10, use these steps:

  • Open Start.
  • Search for msinfo32 and click the top result to open the System Information app.
  • Select the specifications to export from the left navigation pane.
  • A quick tip: Selecting System Summary will export everything. However, if you only need to export the graphics card details, you only need to select the Display item.
  • Click on the File menu.
  • Click the Export option.
  • Select the folder to export the file.
  • Confirm a descriptive name for the report — for example, “Windows 10 Hardware Specifications”.
  • Click the Save button.
  • Open File Explorer.
  • Open the folder containing the exported information.
  • Right-click the text file and select the open option to view the exported system information.

Use a Third-Party App to check pc specs

If you’re looking for something that Windows isn’t providing, you can also try a free third-party utility. Trusted freeware apps that come to mind are Belarc Advisor and CPU-Z. But one of my favorite apps for getting system specs on Windows is aptly called: Speccy. It’s free and easy to use. It comes from Piriform, the makers of CCleaner. We have covered Speccy in the past, and it is still every bit as good.

Just install the app and run it. It provides detailed info about your CPU, RAM, motherboard, graphics card, attached peripherals, and more. What I like about it is it provides a lot of system info in an attractive UI with just a couple of clicks. Whether you’re swapping out a graphics card, fixing a problem, or need detailed specs, there are plenty of ways to find your Windows 10 PC’s information.

PC Specs Test – Check If Your PC Can Run a Game

After you use the ways above to check the full PC specs in Windows 10, now you know your computer processor, CPU, GPU, RAM, etc. If you want to check if a game can run on your PC, you can check the system requirements for the game to run on your PC. Generally, you can quickly find the system requirements for running this game on the game’s website or on a site where it is selling, for instance, you can find the information on each game’s page on the Steam store.

Then you can compare your PC specs with the system requirements of the game, paying attention to the processor, RAM, and GPU requirements particularly. There are some differences between the minimum and recommended requirements. You can run the game on your PC if your Windows 10 computer meets the minimum requirements of the game. But if you want to have a better game-playing experience, meeting the recommended requirements would be better.

Conclusion

Your ability to decide whether or not to upgrade your current system is improved now that you know how to check PC specs of your computer. It should be noted that choosing a newer, better component and installing it in your system are not the only options available to you if you want to upgrade your components.

In fact, if you have an older system, it may make more sense to just buy or build a brand-new system because your older system may not have any components that are valuable enough to maintain.
