On Monday, 21st October, a major outage at Amazon Web Services (AWS) disrupted a large part of the internet. This led to the temporary breakdown of the apps, websites, and digital tools used by millions of users across the globe. The hours-long breakdown of the system, which supports a significant part of the internet, mirrored how much this contemporary world depends on the infrastructure, starting from banking applications and airlines to smart home devices and gaming apps. Yes, this sounds a little concerning. This is why we are here to explain to you everything about the recent AWS outage and how the company responded to it.
What Was the Matter?
At around 07:11 GMT, an AWS outage was experienced by Amazon, disrupting many of the systems, apps, and sites, including banks, entertainment, and gaming channels. The issue emerged from one of AWS’s main data centers in Virginia, its oldest and largest location, after a technical update to the API. API is essentially a bridge between different computer programs, specifically DynamoDB, an important cloud database service that stores user information and other crucial data for several digital platforms.
What Caused the AWS Outage?
Reportedly, the root cause of the AWS outage seems to be an error in the technical update that impacted the Domain Name System (DNS) that keeps the apps connected to the right server addresses. A DNS functions like a log book of the internet, converting website names into numeric IP addresses that systems use to connect to the servers. Due to the DNS disruption, apps could not fetch the IP address for DynamoDB’s API and failed to connect.
With the breakdown of DynamoDB, other AWS services also started to fail. Around 113 services were impacted due to the AWS outage. By 10:11 GMT, the company soon announced the recovery of AWS to normal functioning. However, there was a message showing that they will complete the process over the next few hours.
During the publication, Downdetector, a site that tracks internet outages on the basis of user reports, was still showing issues with apps like OpenAI, ESPN, and Apple Music.
About Cloud and AWS
A cloud is a process of storing and utilizing data or programs over the internet rather than in your system or physical storage devices. Storing in the cloud means the files, apps, or systems are operating on strong servers in data centers. These are mainly operated by the tech giants like Amazon, Google, or Microsoft instead of your PC. In this scenario, AWS permits businesses to rent computing power and storage. It facilitates the technology that supports websites, apps, and other online services in the background.
DynamoDB is one of AWS’s core services that stores key information for businesses, such as customer records. The same day, Amazon reported that customers could not access their DynamoDB data.
Undoubtedly, AWS is the largest cloud service provider across the globe. Cloud outages are nothing new, but they have garnered attention as more businesses regularly depend on these services. The fallout affected people across different areas, as stated by Joshua Mahony, the chief market analyst at Scope Markets. However, this kind of fallout comes with the territory with tech firms, and it is essential to resolve it as quickly as possible to reduce the loss. Joshua Mahony also reported that AWS has acquired around 30% of the market alone, and its users are unlikely to switch easily.
Which Services and Apps Were Impacted?
AWS outage impacted dozens of apps and websites, including the famous ones- Snapchat, Pinterest, and Apple TV, as reported by Downdetector. Other apps like WhatsApp, Signal, Slack, and Zoom were also hindered for a few hours. Apart from this, the gaming services like Roblox, Xbox, and Fortnite also experienced problems.
In the USA, people experienced problems with financial applications like Venomo. Eventually, Starbucks and Etsy also faced issues. Some users reported that their smart home devices, like doorbells and Alexa speakers, stopped functioning. While others reported failure to access the Amazon site or download books on Kindles.
The language learning app Duolingo and creative apps like Canva were among those facing issues on their sites. Reportedly, Associated Press news agency, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal were affected by the AWS outage. AI company Perplexity, Crypto exchange Coinbase, and banks also reported breakdowns, along with US airlines like United and Delta.
During the AWS outage, it was not just Amazon tools that were hindered. Many other firms that depend on AWS for storage, databases, or web hosting were also impacted. These firms run major apps that depend on AWS to store user data and run crucial parts of their systems.

Why Did It Impact So Many Apps?
These errors occur for different reasons. Generally, it is a maintenance problem or a server breakdown. Sometimes it could be just human error, someone misconfiguring something. Or in some cases, it could be a cyber attack. However, in the case of an AWS outage, there is no such sign. AWS reported the issue due to the large data center plant in Northern Virginia.
A consortium of experts opined that it was a textbook illustration of the hazards of storing all your data at a single place and depending solely on AWS.
The two other contenders in the US are Microsoft’s Azure and Google’s Cloud Platform, which could benefit from AWS Outages. On the other hand, the smaller competitors include IBM and Alibaba directly compete with Amazon. Some argue that the US and Europe should immediately establish their own infrastructure and be less dependent on the US for cloud services. However, the AWS outage incident suggests that it is now as simple as it sounds. It would be more clear if you learn the need for cloud storage.
Response of Amazon
AWS accepted the outage and stated that the engineers had gathered immediately to resolve the issue. AWS confirmed that it worked on different parallel ways to increase the speed of recovery. It also reported that the key issue was successfully resolved, though some users still faced minor issues. The company also opined that it would release a detailed post-event report, detailing exactly what and how it happened. So, let’s wait for the release.
