Check Point Software Technologies has decided to acquire Avanan, a rising star in cloud email virus protection, in order to provide best-in-class cloud email malware protection and to expand security to SaaS collaboration suites.
The combined Check Point-Avanan product would be the only integrated tool in the industry to defend the remote labor from malicious files, URLs, and phishing across email, networks, collaboration suites, web, and endpoints, according to the San Carlos, Calif.-based platform security company. According to a person familiar with the issue, Check Point will invest between $250 million and $300 million to acquire Avanan.
Check Point’s natural email security abilities have traditionally been focused on defending Microsoft Exchange servers and on-premises gateways over the cloud, whereas Avanan primarily protects cloud-based email security solutions, according to Manor. Historically, Avanan was marketed directly to SMB clients in the United States, but the firm has broadened its distribution channels in recent years, he added.
“By integrating Avanan into Check Point Infinity, organizations will be able to modernize legacy solutions with email security-as-a-service and protect cloud email and collaboration suites from the most sophisticated attacks,” Dorit Dor, Check Point Chief Product Officer, said in a statement. “I am confident that with this new addition, customers will enjoy the best email security with the best cyber security capabilities.”
The rumored $250 million to $300 million investment cost for Avanan will make it the most major acquisition in Check Point history, greater than than the company’s purchase of public cloud security provider Dome9 for a reported $175 million in October 2018. In early trading, Monday morning, Check Point’s shares were up $0.54 (0.43 percent) to $127.22.

According to Crunchbase, Avanan was formed in 2015, employs over 100 employees, and has raised $41.4 million in three rounds of outside investment. Check Point expects all Avanan personnel to join, including CEO and co-founder Gil Friedrich, who will be Check Point’s vice president of email security. The acquisition of Avanan is anticipated to be completed within the next week.
Check Point’s Purchase History
As per Crunchbase, it is Check Point’s sixth purchase in the last three years. In September 2020, the business acquired remote access security startup Odo Security to assist organizations in enabling safe remote connections for employees to any app. Check Point bought serverless security business Protego in December 2019 to assist clients in avoiding the deployment of insecure code into production.
Check Point had purchased security company Cymplify a month prior in order to safeguard IoT devices against extremely sophisticated assaults by strengthening and safeguarding the devices’ firmware. Check Point bought growing web application and API security provider ForceNock in January 2019 to strengthen its sophisticated machine-learning protection abilities.
Check Point had bought Dome9 three months prior to assist customers to protect multi-cloud installations across Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. As per Crunchbase, Check Point has completed 17 acquisitions throughout the span of its 28-year history.
