Google has long been known for launching new products and making bold claims about the future. However, it seems to forget its existence and kill it after a few months or years. Over the past few years, we have seen Google’s extreme smart home products like Google Home and Nest lagging behind their competitors. Recently, Google announced that it is still in the battlefield and Gemini is the key to unlock the potential of the smart home. Gemini is replacing Google Assistant in the smart speakers and displays of the company, whereas its smart home cameras have the AI-enabled scene recognition feature.
In this article, we will be exploring more about how Gemini is reshaping the future of Google’s Extreme smart home and standing out in the field.
Gemini Rules Out Google Assistant?
The greatest change to Google’s smart home lies in the type of new voice assistant. The conversational and generative AI assistant Gemini is going to replace the longstanding Google Assistant, commonly embedded in smart speakers and displays. Similar to other updates, Google is launching this update to its oldest devices, including the Google Home smart speaker, introduced in 2016, and its first Nest Hub smart display, introduced in 2018. Nevertheless, it is also launching four other new Google Home devices, including three Nest cameras and a Google Home smart speaker.
You can opt for 10 voice options to choose from for Gemini, and Google aims to keep natural, intuitive voice controls and conversational responses for Gemini with additional details. During the rollout of Google’s extreme smart home with Gemini in New York, it was found that Gemini responds to a set of questions regarding ‘how to fix a dishwasher. Google’s Chief Product Officer, Anish Kattukaran, asked Gemini regarding the drainage programs, and Gemini responded with some common ways to fix the drainage issues. When the solutions did not work as expected, Gemini posed follow-up questions with additional solutions without requiring further input.
Gemini further addressed the complicated questions, such as what a day would be ideal for a barbecue this weekend and what ingredients would be needed for a vegetarian pad thai. The conversational tool generated some follow-up questions regarding preferences and dietary limitations.
While operating Google’s extreme smart home devices, Gemini will address the different requests given in line without the need to stop between them. You can ask it to ‘turn off the lights’, ‘switch on the AC’, and ‘lock the doors’, and it will do accordingly. Before, you had to give all the commands at a time or merge them in pairs and pause between each. However, it has become much easier now.
It should also find and address a variety of commands, so you do not need to recall an exact phrase to control a particular gadget. If you ask to ‘turn on the lights’, it should know that you are communicating with the smart speaker located in the living room and perform accordingly. Gemini will find exceptions, so when you ask it to turn off the lights except the one in the living room, it will comply.
Google has long targeted to make smart speakers and displays interactive and intuitive to control. Outshadowing Google Assistant with Gemini feels like a crucial step in that direction. I am confident that it will address the commands effectively in most cases, similar to Google Assistant. It is exciting to see and try it myself. Though, I have already reviewed on future home in 2025 that you must know.
What is Gemini Live?
Previously, we talked about how to use Gemini’s AI voice chat that can help you in understanding this section. Google’s extreme smart home is possible with Gemini Live. It is specifically designed for the younger audience to help them at bedtime. Google’s smart speakers and displays will also embed the new feature named Gemini Live, to start communicating with the AI without repeating the wake phrase or sticking to a particular sentence. For example, you can just speak ‘Hey Google, let’s talk’ and Gemini will continue listening and responding accordingly until you say ‘stop’.
You can ask Gemini Live for ideas or share your thoughts and create a story relevant for a given age, either on its own or continuing with user-given ideas. The same feature can be used for searching and gathering information on the music you wish to play without the need for detailed information. Gemini Live can also help with your projects or offer detailed information on a subject.
Although it is free to use Gemini controls and conversational features for Google’s extreme smart home queries, Gemini Live will come with a new premium tier of services. It may cost around $10 a month and is integrated with the Google AI Pro plan. The price that you pay for the premium services includes significant upgrades for the security cameras ofthe company.
How to Start Using?
I am curious to test these new features out at my own place to see whether Google’s extreme smart home makes a tangible difference compared to Google Assistant. You can also try at home if you are also a tech-savvy person like me who is always eager to try new things. In doing so, ensure that your Google Home app is updated, then click on the profile icon located in the upper-right corner, and then go to Home settings. Navigate to the menu section and check for Early Access. Now select the option to get started. It may take a few minutes to accept your request, and once it is accepted, Google will send you a notification. In our upcoming articles, we will be exploring other new innovations and releases by Google.
