Siri to be Now Powered by OpenAI? Unveiling the Truth

Apple is considering using Artificial Intelligence technology, such as OpenAI, to power a new version of Siri, setting aside its in-house models. It is regarded as a blockbuster move aimed at reviving its struggling AI effort.

The iPhone manufacturer has collaborated with both organizations to use their huge language models for Siri. The manufacturer has asked them to train versions of their models that can run on Apple’s cloud infrastructure for testing. Let’s get to know more about this.

Apple’s Effort to Include OpenAI

Siri to be now powered by OpenAI. Over the past months, Apple has been working to get its AI-enabled Siri back on track after delaying the launch of the halted assistant in March. Then, Apple appointed Mike Rockwell, the head of Vision Pro, as the leader of AI and Siri, following Siri’s loss of confidence in the team’s former chief.

Bloomberg reported that Rockwell asked his team to test whether OpenAI’s chatgpt or Google’s Gemini works well at managing basic requests in comparison to its models. Although Google has Gemini AI features for Android and its Pixel lineup, Samsung licenses Google’s AI model for its devices. Reportedly, it is expected to eliminate a deal with Perplexity, which already has a collaboration with Motorola. At the beginning of this month, Bloomberg revealed that Apple executives had decided to acquire Perplexity to accelerate its AI ambitions.

LLM Siri was mainly absent from the Worldwide Developers Conference of Apple initially, where the SVP of global marketing confirmed that technology did not affect their quality standard. Bloomberg noted that Apple’s plan to include a third-party AI model in Siri is still in its infancy stage, and this is still considered an application of in-house models.

The most-talked changes allow Cupertino, California-based Apple, to offer Siri features along with AI assistants on Android devices. This helps the company save its reputation. Apple representatives, Anthropic and OpenAI, refused to talk. Apple closed up over 2% after Bloomberg reported on the deliberations. This supports the plan for Siri to be powered by OpenAI.

Struggles of Siri

The project to assess external models was initiated by Siri’s chief, Mike Rockwell, and Craig Federighi, the head of software engineering. They had an overview of Siri after removing the duties from John Giannandrea’s command. He was removed after the tepid response to Apple Intelligence and delays in the rollout of Siri features.

Rockwell, who previously introduced the Vision Pro headset, assumed the role of Siri engineering in March. After his takeover, he encouraged his new team to evaluate whether Siri could enhance its query management capabilities by utilizing Apple’s AI models or third-party technologies, including Claude, ChatGPT, and Alphabet Inc.’s Google Gemini.

After several testing rounds, Rockwell and others concluded that Anthropic’s technology is most effective for Siri’s needs. This led to a discussion about Claude’s usage.

The Siri assistant was released in 2011 and has now failed to compete with recognized AI chatbots. Also, Apple’s efforts to upgrade the software have been halted by engineering snags and delays.

Apple unveiled Siri capabilities last year, including ones that would allow it to access users’ data and analyze on-screen content to better fulfill queries. The organization also showed technology that will enable Siri to control apps and features across Apple devices, more specifically.

The improvements were far from ready. Apple initially announced plans to release, but it delayed the launch indefinitely. They are now planning to roll out next spring.

AI Uncertainty

People involved in Apple’s AI team report it is operating with a high level of uncertainty and a lack of clarity, with people poring over multiple possible directions. Apple has already issued a multibillion-dollar budget for 2026 to run the models through the cloud, but its plans for the future remain unclear. This also supports Siri, to is now powered by OpenAI.

Federighi, Rockwell, and others have become increasingly familiar with the idea that embracing beyond technology is key to a near-term turnaround. They do not see the need for Apple to rely on its models, which they currently consider less important.

Licensing third-party AI may show an approach taken by Samsung. Although the organization promotes its features under the Galaxy AI umbrella, several features are mainly based on Gemini. Amazon is already applying anthropic principles to assist with the launch of the new Alexa+.

In the upcoming years, improving technology will enable executives to recognize that Apple should hold accountability for AI models, considering their increasing significance in how products function. The organization is working on multiple projects, like a tabletop robot and glasses that will primarily use AI.

Apple has also considered collaborating with Perplexity to improve its AI work. It arranged a conference with Thinking Machines Lab, the AI startup founded by the previous OpenAI chief technology officer.

Declining Morale

The Apple models are developed by a team of 100 people led by Ruoming Plang. The leader joined Apple in 2021 after leaving Google. He reports to the senior director leading AI research.

Luong is one of Giannandrea’s chief lieutenants. The foundation models team is an integral part of AI groups reporting to Giannandrea. However, Federighi and Rockwell have an essential role in this.

Regardless of the path, the planned shift has impacted the team, which boasts some of the best talent in the AI industry. Some people have shown internally that they are upset about the adoption of technology by a third party. This created a perception that they are liable for the AI shortcomings within the company. They stated that they could leave for multimillion-dollar packages streamed by the Meta platform and OpenAI.

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has been offering the engineers an annual package of $10 to $40 million to contribute to its new Superintelligence labs group. Apple is alleged to have cut its wages for its AI engineers below what they receive in the market. This also influences Siri to be now powered by OpenAI.

One of the most senior researchers in large language models at Apple left last week. He had worked for Apple for around eight years, and some coworkers found it challenging to replace him, considering his unique skill set and the desire of rivals to pay more for talent.

This month, Apple nearly lost the team behind MLX, its primary open-source system for developing machine learning models on the latest Apple chips. Hence, Apple may choose ChatGPT or Claude and Siri to be now powered by OpenAI.
