Set Up a Secret Phone Number In a Few Easy Ways

Previously, people would frequently change their mobile numbers. If you shifted to a new location, it is obviously that you would get a new number. However, things have changed these days. Now, you can take your first mobile number with you for the entire life, even keeping the area code on a new continent if you wish to pay for it.

Though this has downsides too. Having another number related to you for life, as a social security or driver’s license number. This implies that it is another easy factor for the bad actors to monitor you. Particularly, as your mobile number may be linked to almost every digital account you have.

How to Set Up a Secret Phone Number?

The way to avoid this is to never share your personal information, like your mobile number, except with your close friends and family. There are many promising reasons for doing this. Perhaps you can buy or sell products on Facebook Marketplace, manage an Airbnb listing, search for a job, or use an online dating app. Do not share your mobile number.

Generally a burner could be used, which is a no-contract, prepaid mobile number. For example, if you buy an ultracheap handset in a store, activate it with a call or online, use it for sometimes and then discard it. The dispose of the number is the ‘burning’ part, but tossing the phone and number is optional, as you can recharge a prepaid phone and continue using it. A burner allows you to not block a person from your permanent number. You do not even have to get a new number. However, the option is there, though your original mobile number remains the same.

For the second number, you may get a prepaid SIM card or a cheap carrier if you want to go to that direction. It may seem handy if you have an additional phone with you. Several new unlocked phones support eSIM standards, where the SIM card that finds you with the carrier is totally integrated and changeable through software. Some phones are compatible with many phone numbers per eSIM. Even wireless providers are giving dual-SIM options. For example, Verizon has a plan that allows users to add a second number to their dual SIM device at just $15 per month.

You, like me, may already have a costly handset like an iPhone or Android phone, so you may not want another device and manage SIMs. Fortunately, a long time ago, I found a trick to add an extra, temporary mobile number that is compatible with your smartphone through burner apps and services. The numbers they generate may be used to send and receive messages with pictures.

Having a second number through an app is not like using a basic number before calling, which shows you as blocked or unknown. There are some burner services and apps that showcase a new number when you make a call, so return calls can happen. If you just want to receive calls, you have options like voicemail and call forwarding.

However, you must be aware of some drawbacks of the burner apps and services. The first one is that you cannot use them to call 911 for help. Some build that limit into their terms of service since they do not want to get banned. Secondly, the organizations behind some solutions have a very limited number of mobile numbers to use. This means you may be on the recipient list of calls from people looking to reach a customer who previously had your mobile number. If you can ignore these and still want a secondary and significantly temporary number, check these apps and services.

Apps and Services to Set Up a Secret Phone Number

Burner

Burner acquired the best name for this type of product. Restricted to US and Canadian numbers, the service delivers limited-time access to some digits. If your account or free trial lapses without an update, the number will do the same. The paid subscription offers up to three mobile numbers with unlimited minutes and messages. It is ideal to register your Burner subscription on the web instead of the mobile app, so Apple or Google is not related to this transaction. It promises it is 100% ad-free, bans spammers, and also supports image texts.

Whenever you call using Burner, it is actually your phone calling Burner that, in turn, presents a relay call to the number you wish to reach. This is not very confusing. A PIN lock ensures the security of the apps.

Hushed

Hushed is almost similar to Burner, but with a foothold in more than 40 countries and a level of simplicity that makes it ideal to consider. Stop thinking about the minutes left on your real mobile number. Hushed uses VoIP, which makes calls over Wi-Fi. So, subscribers can get up to three lines simultaneously.

Google Voice

The primary focus of Google Voice is to make call routing using a single mobile number that rings on all your numbers without any cost. That way, if there is an important call, it may reach your phone, your home number, your office number, and others as well. You can simply pick up the call from where you want. This is not an issue in the one-phone-per-person mobile scenario. However, at least you have a permanent second number without any charges.

The Google Voice app also has a dialer which allows you to call or text. The recipient can find your Google Voice number for the called ID, and if they get back to you, you will get it at the present numbers. It is dependent on VoIP so it uses Wi-Fi or phone data plan. It works through apps on iOS and Android or even on the web.

These are the reliable tools and apps to set Up a secret phone number. However, you should not forget the downsides.

Line 2

Line 2 is a second number for your phone which emphasises on full-on, cloud-based business mobile service for small businesses. Every Line2 account has unlimited texts and virtual calling service. You can use iOS or Android apps to use this.
