Microsoft Notepad: Your Next AI-powered Writing Assistant

Have you ever thought of a Microsoft Notepad generating text for you? It sounds cool. Right? Microsoft is all set to launch a new feature in Microsoft Notepad that can actually generate text on your command, thanks to AI. It is going to be a part of the Windows 11 update, expected to be released to Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev channels with Copilot Plus PCs. The latest version will also include AI-powered Paint and Snipping Tool features, where you can easily generate stickers and automatically crop and resize screenshots.

In this article, we will share the great features and new updates with you and explain how you can leverage them in your daily life.

What’s New in Microsoft Notepad?

Over the years, Microsoft Notepad has been a simple text editor for Windows. However, with the new update, Windows is launching the feature to create new content in Microsoft Notepad using Generative AI. The latest writing feature supports you in quickly generating text based on your prompt. Now, it has become easy to start from scratch or build upon already-existing content with the help of AI.

To start, you can place your cursor where you want to insert new text or choose content that you would like to use as a reference. Next, right-click and select ‘Write’ from Copilot section, or use Ctrl + Q shortcut. Enter prompt into dialog and press ‘Send’. You will see AI-generated output on the screen.

You can also select the ‘Keep text’ option to include it in the document or delete it if it doesn’t help in Microsoft Notepad. You can also continue fine-tuning the result by adding more relevant prompts to improve your text draft further.

However, if you wish to disable AI features, you can do it through app settings.

You need to sign in to your Microsoft account to activate the features. Microsoft 365 Personal, Enterprise, Family, and Copilot Pro subscriptions support the new feature and use AI-generated text in Microsoft Notepad.

The Write feature follows two other AI-powered tools that have been tested by Microsoft with Microsoft Notepad. The two tools are – Summarise and Rewrite. With the summarise tool, you can generate a summary of the text in any document while Rewrite allows you to rewrite the text, focusing on the text’s tone, shortening or expanding the text, or rephrasing the text.

AI in Paint

Apart from Microsoft Notepad, Paint is the focus of AI. The latest update is followed by three cool improvements to improve your creative experience. First, they have introduced a sticker generator tool featured by AI technology. This allows the users to create customised stickers by entering a simple prompt. First, you must tap the ‘Sticker Generator’ button in Copilot menu. Now, you can type in the prompt to describe the sticker that you want to generate. For example, you may type in ‘a cat wearing sunglasses’ and click the Generate button. This will generate unique set of stickers based on your prompt. After generating the stickers, you can click on any of them to apply them immediately to your canvas. Copy the sticker to use in other applications or save it for later use. To use your stickers that you recently generated, you need to tap on the ‘Stickers’ option in the Paint toolbar.

The new updates also combine object selection. This refers to an innovative selection tool that integrates AI technology to help people separate and edit individual elements in the image. For this feature, you need to click on the ‘Object Select’ tool in the toolbar and pinpoint particular elements on the canvas to choose and make immediate edits.

These two features—sticker generator and object select—will be accessible on Copilot+PCs. To access the sticker generator, like Microsoft Notepad, you need to sign in to your Microsoft account.

Finally, Microsoft has come up with a new welcome experience in Paint after Microsoft Notepad. The change is made to help users find and learn about the newest and most beneficial features of the application. This dialog offers a quick overview of the potential of Paint and acts as a helpful starting point for both new and repeated users. However, if you want, you can disable it anytime and resume it later by clicking the megaphone icon in the top-right corner of the Paint toolbar.

These features turn Microsoft Notepad from a passive canvas to a more active one and motivate users to interact with one of the AI interfaces of Microsoft.

Updates for Snipping Tool

In the next update, along with Microsoft Notepad, Microsoft will bring two new features to Snipping Tool: a perfect screenshot and a color picker. The perfect screenshot is the latest AI-enabled feature in Snipping Tool that enables you to concisely capture the content on your screen, eliminating the need to crop or resize the post-capture on your Copilot + PC. To start with, you should go to the Snipping Tool toolbar either within the app or by using the Print Screen keyboard shortcut. Choose the perfect screenshot button from the taskbar when in rectangle mode, and choose a place on your screen. After activating it, the perfect screenshot will smartly resize based on your selected content.

You can also quickly take a perfect screenshot by pressing the Ctrl keyboard shortcut after opening the Snipping Tool. You can move and edit the area before finalising the click, ensuring that you have the perfect screenshot every time. It is accessible only on Copilot + PCs like Microsoft Notepad.

Additionally, you can enjoy the feature of capturing more information on the screen through the launch of the Color Picker. To access it, you can enable the snipping toolbar from the app or use the Print Screen keyboard shortcut. Now choose Color Picker from the taskbar and then select a colour code on the monitor. You can select from HEX, RGB, or HSL values. If you need a more precise color, you can zoom by using your cursor or using Ctrl +/—shortcuts.

The color picker is best for designers, developers, and anyone who wants to quickly match a color seen on the monitor.

Wrapping Up

Now that you know the upcoming updates that will revolutionise the way you used to use Microsoft Notepad, Snipping Tool, or Paint. Microsoft Notepad is not only an AI improvement that Microsoft has added, but other applications are also bringing great improvements. However, one thing that we need to keep in mind is that AI features do not come entirely free. You need Copilot Plus PCs as well as Windows 11 to get your hands on these features. However, the price has not yet been decided by Microsoft.
