Meta AI Camera Roll: Is it Violating Your Privacy?

Over the years, Meta trained its AI programs using billions of public images uploaded by users on the servers of Facebook and Instagram. Currently, it is aiming to access billions of pictures that users have not uploaded yet to these channels. Meta disclosed that it is not using the data to train its AI models. However, it remains suspicious whether it will do so in the future or not.  Let’s dig deeper into what Meta AI camera roll is going to bring in the near future.

Meta AI Camera Roll Usage

A report by TechCrunch revealed that Facebook users are attempting to post something on the Story feature witness pop-up messages giving options if they would like to choose ‘cloud processing’ that would grant permission to Facebook to access the media from user’s camera roll and store it to the cloud regularly to develop ideas like frames, AI restyling or themes like birthdays and graduations.

By enabling this feature, users agree to the terms and conditions of Meta AI, which permits their AI to examine the media and facial highlights of those unpublished pictures. You also permit Meta to store and utilise the personal information.

Recently, Meta considered extracting data from content that has not been uploaded to Facebook and Instagram since 2007 to equip its generative AI models. Even if the company suggested that it has only used public posts uploaded by adult users aged 18 and above, however, it has been unclear what exact public details and adult users have been targeted since 2007.

Meta also disclosed that it is not currently using the unpublished media with the new feature. This implies that Meta is presently training AI models by extracting and storing the media which is not yet been published by the users themselves. This trial does not use people’s images to enhance or train their AI models.

Meta’s AI Usage Terms

Meta states that the feature is in its inception phase, harmless, and totally opt-in. They are finding new avenues to make content sharing effortless for users on Facebook by testing suggestions of customised and ready-to-share content from a user’s camera roll. Such suggestions are opt-in only and will be displayed to you- unless you choose to publish them. It can be switched off anytime. Meta AI camera roll images could be used to improve these recommendations. However, the media is not being used to enhance AI models in this trial.

This may not sound totally different from Google Photos, which similarly suggests AI improves your images once you enable Google Gemini. However, unlike Google, which clearly states that it does not train gen AI models with private data directly from Google Photos, Meta’s recent AI usage terms do not clarify whether this data is extracted through cloud processing are applied for AI training purposes. This uncertainty keeps going forward.

Although opting in grants permission to Meta to access and store 30 days of the unedited Meta AI camera roll at a time, it seems that Meta is storing some data for longer than the decided period. The Meta AI camera roll recommendations like pets, marriages and convocations, include images that are older than 30 days.

Fortunately, users on Facebook do not have the option to switch off camera roll cloud processing in their settings. Hence, after activation, it will also start removing unpublished media from the cloud after 30 days.

Backlash Against this Feature

This feature reflects a new attack on our previously confidential data, which bypasses the point of conscientiously deciding to upload a media file for public use. Reportedly, Meta is already providing AI restyling suggestions on past uploads. However, many users are unaware of this feature. A user stated that Facebook had turned her wedding images into Ghibli art without her consent. This forces us to think about our data privacy and Gallery safety.

To date, there has not been much backlash against this feature. However, some Facebook users have slipped across the AI-generated photo suggestions while creating a new story and raised concerns regarding it. For example, a user on Reddit disclosed that Facebook has extracted an old picture and automatically converted it into anime using Meta AI.

When a user asked for help around this feature on the Facebook group, the search directed to a section of camera roll sharing suggestions in the settings. There is a preferences section under Facebook’s settings. On the Cameral roll sharing suggestions page, there are two options. The first allows Facebook to suggest pictures from the camera roll while browsing the app. The second one is where users can allow or disallow the cloud processing that allows Meta to generate AI images using camera roll photos. Additionally, it is nothing new to be monitored and tracked by the Meta AI camera roll.
