Mahindra sells two SUVs in its Scorpio range. One is the Scorpio N. The other is Scorpio Classic. Both are capable but both serve completely different buyers. This article compares both. You can choose the one that is better for you.
1. Price and models
The Scorpio Classic price starts at ₹13.77 lakh ex‑showroom. It goes up to ₹17.72 lakh for top-end Classic S11 variant. This makes it among one of the most affordable 7-seater SUVs on sale today. On the other hand, the Scorpio N price starts from ₹13.99 lakh and reaches ₹25.42 lakh ex‑showroom. Clearly, the Scorpio N is a more premium model, especially when you consider the higher variants.
2. Engine
Scorpio Classic uses a 2.2‑litre diesel engine. It gives about 15 kmpl mileage in test cycle. Scorpio N, on the other hand, has a 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel options. The ARAI mileage ranges from 12.12 to 15.94 kmpl depending on variant. Not only is this SUV more powerful, its diesel engine is even available with 4×4 option. Plus, both the engine variants get automatic transmission option. It even offers a higher NVH control.
3. Design and comfort
Scorpio Classic looks rugged. It has basic features like steel wheels or basic alloy wheels. It has fewer high-end features. It offers manual transmission and seating for 7 or 9 occupants. Scorpio N looks modern – It has bold styling and sharper lines. Even lower variants like Z4 offer touchscreen, adjustable ORVMs 6 airbags and many other features. The top-end variants even offer a sunroof, widescreen touchscreen, ADAS and other such premium features.
4. Safety and tech
Classic has dual front airbags and ABS. No automatic or 4×4 option is on offer. No advanced driver assistance is available either. On the other hand, the Scorpio N has more features. It offers ESC, hill hold, crash control in higher trims. Some variants get ADAS, electric sunroof, 4×4 and more. It has even earned a five‑star safety rating from Global NCAP.
5. Space and seating
Classic offers 7- and 9‑seater layouts. One can opt between rear bench or side-facing seats for the third row. It is a good option for carrying more passengers. Scorpio N comes in 6- or 7‑seater versions. The third row is tight and fits small kids only. The interior feels much more modern but space is a little less.
6. Ride and handling
Classic is firm. It feels stable but ride isn’t plush. Plus, the steering is light and not very confidence inspiring. On the other hand, the Scorpio N has a refined ride. The steering is light but definitely offers more confidence as it’s better tuned. It has better handling on highways as well as on curvy roads. Body roll is noticeable at speed but it’s definitely nowhere as high as you experience in Scorpio Classic.
7. Which one to pick?
- Choose Scorpio Classic if:
- You want a lower price
- You need a 9‑seater layout.
- You prefer manual and no fuss.
- You drive less and want diesel mileage.
- Choose Scorpio N if:
- You want modern design.
- You need automatic or 4×4.
- You prefer high safety, more tech and better infotainment.
- You have a higher budget.
Verdict
Both SUVs serve different needs. Classic is old‑school, rugged, and cheaper. It is ideal for rough use and hauling more passengers. Scorpio N is newer. It has more tech and it feels much posher. It offers better drive and safety. It costs more too. In plain terms: Classic is for those on a budget but Scorpio N is a far more modern model that’s even costlier.
