Elon Musk’s Grokipedia is Now Live, Competing With Wikipedia

xAI’s Grokipedia is finally live, but it is quite similar to a Wikipedia-like online encyclopedia. The similarities between the two are unexpectedly deeper. Grokipedia’s design is currently very basic, like Wikipedia’s. Let’s unfold how Elon Musk’s Grokipedia competes with Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia.

Grokipedia’s Design

The homepage is basically a big search bar, and entries look like basic Wikipedia entries, with headings, subheadings, and citations. You may not find any photos on the site right now. Wikipedia allows users to edit pages, but Grokipedia does not yet have this feature. It has a big edit button at the top on some pages, and when you click it, it shows edits that are already being made without mentioning who is actually referred to or who made the changes. Hence, you may not be able to suggest changes of your own.

Entries also claim that Grok has fact-checked them, which is controversial right now because large language models often generate false facts. Nevertheless, despite Elon Musk’s promises that Grokipedia would be a great improvement over Wikipedia. Some articles are found to be adapting information from Wikipedia. For example, you can see a message at the bottom of the page for MacBook Air- ‘The content is adapted from Wikipedia. Whereas in some cases, the adaptation goes beyond a rewrite. For example, you can see a message on the PlayStation 5 and Lincoln Mark VIII pages, and both are almost identical, word-for-word and line-for-line to their Wikipedia pages.

Even Grokipedia wants Wikipedia to continue. Lauren Dickinson, a spokesperson from Wikimedia, stated. This is not the first time that Grokipedia has been caught resembling Wikipedia. However, in his last response, Musk stated that this will be resolved by the end of the year. Nevertheless, not every article of Grokipedia is adapted from Wikipedia, including some on controversial topics.

Grokipedia in Its Infancy Stage

Based on the ticket at the bottom of the homepage, Grokipedia has more than 885,000 articles. Wikipedia presently has around 7 million English pages. However, this is the early stage of Elon Musk’s Grokipedia, which has a v0.1 version number on the homepage. Like Wikipedia, you can find articles on different topics like Taylor Swift, Buckingham Palace, and the Baseball World Series. Although Wikipedia is managed and edited by volunteers, how Grokipedia articles are assembled remains unknown. Reportedly, the site is powered by the same xAI models which is being used in Musk’s Grok chatbot. However, some articles are probably adapted from Wikipedia.

Wikimedia’s Response

The San Francisco-based Wikimedia stated that it is still processing how Grokiedia functions. As an enormous trove of information with few usage restrictions, Wikipedia has been an important source for training AI chatbots, along with counterparts ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Wikipedia also states that this human-based knowledge is what AI firms depend on to generate content, and even Grokipedia wants Wikipedia to stay long.

Wikipedia has been a target of the political right. Republican decision makers in the US Congress initiated an investigation in the month of August for the allegation of ‘manual efforts’ in Wikipedia’s editing process. This is called injecting bias and avoiding neutral viewpoints on its platform and the AI systems that depend on it.

Wikipedia required its volunteer editors to cite almost every sentence or paragraph with a primary source. On the other hand, some of the Grokipedia entries are thinly sourced, like an entry on the Chola Dynasty, which has only three linked sources in comparison to Wikipedia’s 113 linked sources and dozens of referenced books. Grokipedia’s entry on Wikipedia accuses the site of having “systemic ideological biases, mainly a left-leaning slant in coverage of political figures and topics”.

The Wikimedia Foundation also stated that, unlike the latest projects, Wikipedia’s potential is clear- it has clear policies, rigorous volunteer oversight, and a solid culture of continuous betterment. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, designed to keep billions of readers’ information without endorsing a particular viewpoint. Advantage and Motivation

A key different between Wikipedia and Grokipedia lies in their purpose and business model. Wikipedia is operated by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation, and the majority of the volunteers are inspired mainly by public interest. On the other hand, xAI, X, and Grokipedia are commercial firms.

Although profit goals are not unethical, they can distort profits. When X started trading its blue tick verification, credibility became a commodity instead of a trust marking. If knowledge is sold in a similar way, there will be expansion in bias, influenced by what generates engagement and profit.

The real advancement lies not in isolating human intervention but in improving it. Those who find bias in Wikipedia could make a large contribution by inspiring editors from different backgrounds to actively participate or by merging the effort to improve existing content. In this age where misinformation is very common, transparency, diversity, and open debate can be the best ways for ensuring truth.

Is AI unbiased?

If Wikipedia shows the biases of the human writers and their sources, AI comes with the same problem with the data-based biases. Large language models like those used by xAI’s Grok are injected with enormous amounts of data collected from online sources, including books, news articles, and social media, and most importantly, Wikipedia. Studies reveal that LLMs generate existing gender, political, and racial biases that could be seen in their training dataset.

Musk has said that Grok is made to address such distortions. However, Grok itself has been accused of including bias. A study revealed that Grok is more politically neutral compared to its rivals but is perceived as centre-biased. Whether the model used for Grokipedia depends on similar data and algorithms, it is challenging to find how an AI-driven encyclopedia would manage to reproduce the biases perceived by Musk in Wikipedia.

Overall, it is yet to find how Elon Musk’s Grokipedia will compete with the well-established Wikipedia with its adapted content. Stay tuned to receive more updates on this topic.
