BMW’s iX3 is Here – The First Neue Klasse EV With Superbrains

BMW has been hinting at its anticipated next-gen ‘Neue Klasse’ electric vehicle for years. It attempted to bring exceptional batteries, better range, and an exclusive ‘superbrain’ with elevated computing power. September 5 marks the first revelation of the brand Neue Klass vehicle ‘BMW’s iX3’. At first glance, it has gained much attention. If you want to know ‘why’, continue reading.

The BMW’s iX3 made its first appearance at the Munich auto show, showcasing the 109-year-old dominance of the company to reinvent itself as a future-ready auto manufacture that realizes the increasing significance of software in the automotive industry. It is the tip of the spear in the effort of the company to confront the rising influence of China, which has become leader exporter of high-tech electric vehicles in the world. BMW’s iX3 will soon join the 40 more Neue Klasse models over the next two years as the company radically changes its designs, developments, and sales. The purpose is to make an ultimate driving machine.

Charging Speed and Range

BMW’s iX3 will be the first EV designed on a 900-volt architecture, which the auto manufacturer claims will bring lightning-fast charging speeds of up to 400kW. It will also add as much as 230 miles of range in only 10 minutes, which is probably the highest speed in the US compared to the normal range of 150-350kW.

The iX3 is also the first electric vehicle to feature in-house-developed Gen6 cylindrical battery cells from BMW, which deliver 30% more range, up to 30% faster charging speeds, and 20% higher energy density. They also cost 50% less to manufacture.

BMW was not prepared to unveil the exact energy content of the new battery of the iX3. However, it is informed that the model will support the sports activity vehicle (SAV) for more than 400 miles of EPA-estimated range. This is as low as 600 miles of range, as predicted by the automaker in 2022. However, when it comes to EV range, the iX3 would still be placed at the top.

The iX3 50 xDrive will be the first type to launch the assembly at BMW’s newly built unit in Hungary. It features an all-wheel drive motor setup, with the potential to support 463 horsepower and 476 lb-ft of torque. This version of iX3 will receive US dealerships by mid-2026, with a starting cost of $60,000, followed by the rear-wheel drive models.

Superbrains

BMW’s iX3 will be the first-ever model to feature the abstract name ‘Heart of Joy’ computer, which is one of the touted four ‘superbrains’ of Neue Klasse. This unexpected black box integrates traction, stability, and electric motor management functions, which are generally managed by a dozen various processors procured from different suppliers. Integrating these functions, iX3 is definitely going to be a bigger success.

The set of displays, including the instrument cluster, central display, and heads-up display, integrates to develop the Panoramic iDrive, which operates based on the automaker’s Operating System X. BMW states that it will improve the experience with the iX3 to ensure that the drivers are vigilant of the roads and prevent distractions while driving. Also, the auto manufacturer has included physical knobs and buttons for the most crucial controls like HVAC, mirror control, audio volume, and warning lights.

BMW’s iX3 is the first push into the changing landscape of software-enabled vehicles. Hence, there is a wide array of digital features that automakers will perceive will improving over time through over-the-air upgrades. During the launch, the company claimed that it had acquired superior intelligence when it comes to interior lights, which light up automatically if the sensors detect that the driver is looking for something, or a charging port flap, which opens automatically when it finds an approaching plug. On the other hand, the app notifications include those that detect something moving inside the vehicle when it is locked.

Digital keys on smartphones and or wearables will be used to unlock and start the iX3. The company states that it supports leading manufacturers, including Apple, Google, and Samsung, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

How does BMW’s iX3 Stack Up?

The first thing that attracted us was the slim design of the iX3, which has a more vertically aligned kidney grille. This is something that distinguishes it from other EV predecessors. One may argue that BMW’s signature design feature has gone out of control in the EV era, spreading lewdly across the front end of the iX. Hence, it may be surprising that an auto manufacturer would reduce its aggressiveness for its new flagship battery-enabled vehicle. Instead of a wider grille, we are getting a new, sophisticated horizontal lightning design.

When it comes to size, BMW’s iX3 is about the same size as i4, though a little taller (64.4 inches) a slightly wider (74.6 inches). However, it is not as tall as iX at 188.3 inches, but taller than most versions of gas-powered X3.

BMW is trying to compete with Tesla and a new landscape of Chinese manufacturers such as Xiaomi and Xpeng that precisely understand software and have extensive experience in manufacturing vehicles with superior digital experiences. The German auto manufacturer is also making great efforts with its EVs and plug-in hybrids to see double-digit sales growth year over year.

Since governments across the world are supporting their EV incentives, BMW will face a potential hurdle of affordability. The high-end and premium EV landscape is fully competitive with traditional manufacturers like BMW, AUDI, and Mercedes competing against the new entrants like Tesla, Rivian, and Lucid. BMW’s iX3 will not disappoint the market as it is an important part of the organizational mission to appeal to buyers in the EV market by offering a perfect balance of power, range, and software. Therefore, the ambition is to make the iX3 an ideal choice among customers.

Summary

BMW’s iX3 is a revolutionary movement for the company’s portfolio in the EV market. The Neue Klasse is the biggest future-focused project for the company, which is a huge change in terms of technologies. Therefore, the iX3 model offers the latest design and technology innovations that will drive the EV market soon. We will come up with more updates on this.
