Securing Your Home Against Common Threats: A Family-Focused Approach

t’s easy to become complacent and ignore potential threats to your home and family. However, the data signals a need for vigilance. The US nationwide burglary rate, albeit at an all-time low, is still stable, with 269.8 cases per 100,000 people in 2022. Additionally, the rise of e-commerce creates opportunities for theft of packages left on the porch or in front of an apartment door.

Break-ins and porch pirates not only cause material damage but reduce the sense of security and create anxiety among family members. That’s why it’s time to review a few steps to make your home crime-resistant and a genuine family sanctuary.

Install Security Lighting

It’s an old and inexpensive trick that is still relevant in the 21st century. Positioning security lighting in the home and around the property is a relatively effective method to deter burglars. Having the lights on signals that someone is at home. Thieves don’t like company and will stay away from their intended target. The advantage of smart lights is that you do not have to remember to turn them on. At a preset time, they will automatically light up.

Combining floodlights with motion sensors creates a sort of alarm that activates a high-luminescence light when somebody nears the house at night. Undesirable visitors will find themselves in the spotlight and rushingly distance themselves from the property. You can install the lighting system or hire an electrician to do the work.

Secure the Doors and Windows

Securing Your Home

The weakest link in every castle is its gateway and the same principle applies to houses. Intruders gain entry via a door or window. The first tip is to be disciplined and not leave a door or window open, making the job easier for the burglar. Before going to sleep, inspect exterior doors and check the windows. Check how sturdy the front door is by inspecting the material and frame.

Placing bars on the windows is not aesthetically pleasing, but covering the windows with thin sheets of plexiglass can slow down an intruder. Another solution is a glass break sensor, which will indicate when the window is tampered with. It’s a good idea not to leave a ladder sitting around the house. Burglars can use it to reach upper-floor windows. Methods to reinforce the entry points include:

  • Installing a deadbolt
  • Using smart locks
  • Setting up a video doorbell
  • Bolstering the mail slot
  • Adding a strike plate

Develop Security Habits

Inviting crime is easy with reckless behavior. Modern criminals research potential targets and collect information before committing to a break-in. Safe behavior revolves around these habits:

  • Instruct your children not to talk to strangers
  • Do not share personal information with unverified telephone marketers or participate in polls
  • Never announce vacations on social media
  • Inform a trusted neighbor to keep a close watch on your property when away from home
  • Read crime reports from your city or area to narrow down trends and identify potential dangers
  • Never hide keys outside your home

Purchase Protective Equipment

Home security is a concept aimed at prevention against external and internal threats. Criminals are not the only ones that can cause harm and material damage. Family members can get burned or electrocuted, to name just a few of the dangers looming in the home.

Fires are a common occurrence in households. Purchasing a fire extinguisher and firefighting gloves equips you to rapidly contain a fire without suffering injuries. Installing smoke detectors is also a good precaution.

Having a first aid kit packed with essential medications, disinfectants, bandages, or specific medication for a family member with a chronic condition is recommended. Easily accessible first aid kits on each floor are an even better approach. Train your children how to place a bandage or treat a burn. Go over basic first aid tips regularly to maintain proficiency.

Formulate a Plan for Emergencies

Prepare a list of responses for different emergency scenarios. Outline what every family member needs to do in case of a burglary, shooting, fire, flooding, or earthquake. Regularly practice the plan to see how ready family members are for each crisis. The additional benefit of training is creating muscle memory that results in automated and faster response.

Children need more tutoring about how to identify and cope with danger. Define playing boundaries for your children in the yard or neighborhood, instructing them not to go beyond the reference points themselves. Do not perceive home security as a chore, as it’s crucial to be aware of risks and plan accordingly.
