Antwerp Laboratory Hit By Ransomware Attack

Recently, the General Medical Laboratory (AML) in the Antwerp district of Hoboken which was working for the management of Covid-19 pandemic has been the victim of ransomware attack. The attackers installed ransomware on the lab’s website and the website stopped working. The hackers demanded a large amount of ransom in order to make the site function normally.

Security researchers have decided to disconnect the network to carry out the investigation and find information about the ransomware. The federal Computer Crimes Unit investigated the attack after the incident was reported to the Antwerp prosecutor’s office. Though the main motive of the ransomware gang was to extract huge sums of money as ransom, still it can be predicted that the hackers have tried to steal data. However the attack is still under investigation and it remains unclear if the attack was also aimed at data theft.
